Do you set priorities for your day?

For many, the answer may be yes, but what they really have in front of them is a list of tasks.

Priorities are not tasks and priorities don’t belong on a to-do list. Instead, they can be what drives your to-do list and your tasks.

Why We Need to Set Priorities

Without priorities, do you really know where you’re going or are you just along for the ride? Being along for the ride may seem like fun, but without any directions, it’s literally just a ride with no destination.

When you set priorities, you have something outside of your plan, your to-do list and your daily schedule helping you to remain motivated and see the destination for the day, week, month or year. Priorities are vital to our success as humans and so important they have been used all throughout history. Even the bible sets priorities for Christians, which are often misunderstood or reset by us in the wrong order.

Setting your top three priorities for today will make a difference. These are not your top three tasks to complete. However, your top priorities may help to drive those tasks you want to complete.

For example, my top three priorities for most days include, Show my Wife I Love Her, Take One Step Forward With My Calling/Passion/Purpose and Deliver Any Necessary Client Work.

As a Christian, I don’t set my #1 priority to worship God because God should be found in everything I do. It’s above the #1 priority by default and the driver behind the other three priorities. I do put my spouse at the top of this list and while these priorities will certainly change when we have children, spouse should always come before children, according to the bible, not me.

These three priorities will now drive my to-do list for the day, which may include the following:

  • Wake Up Early
  • Complete Morning Routine
  • Write for My Blog and EBooks
  • Write for Clients
  • Deliver all Written Work
  • Spend time on Social Media Marketing
  • Serve my Wife through cooking meals for the day
  • Spend quality time with my wife

Of course, this to-do list may include more specific tasks, but you get the idea. With the right priorities driving your day, it’s much easier to set yourself up for success.

Choosing Your Priorities

Choosing the right priorities makes all the difference. Often, we forget to set priorities and it causes us to have them all out of whack. If I didn’t have a priority set about my wife, I may end up neglecting her without knowing it. This isn’t uncommon considering many people work long hours and barely see their spouse throughout the week.

When our priorities are out of whack, we don’t know how to say no when we should say no. It’s important to choose the right priorities and really figure out what matter most to you in life.

Take some time, in silence, to think about what you really want from life. If it helps, picture yourself on your death bed. What would you have done differently? What do you wish you had done more of?

Nobody on their death bed truly wishes they had done more work or made more money. However, many wish they had spent more time with certain people in their lives. This is a strong driver for setting priorities. Whether it’s your spouse, your children or even your best friend, when you have great relationships (or relationships you wish were great) they should probably be priorities in your life.

Along with the relationships we have, another strong driver for priorities is your calling/passion/purpose in life. What you are truly meant to do and what you truly love to do is a very powerful thing. If it’s not a priority, you’ll never get to a point where that’s what you do for a living.

I can attest to this one big time. I have spent nearly a decade knowing I need to write for myself and share what’s going on in my head with the world. However, I have been so distracted by money and client work that I put off my own writing time and time again. It wasn’t a priority, so it didn’t get done. Today, it’s a priority and I am putting in the work, writing for my blog and creating eBooks.

Of course, setting a priority to make sure the bills are paid, food is on the table and a roof is over your family’s head is also rather important. For me, it’s client work that provides. For you, it may be a job you work.

Your priorities may be far different than mine and that’s perfectly okay. You are not me and I am not you. However, you can use my example above to figure out what your #1, #2 and #3 priories are for today. They may not be the same in 6 months or even when the weekend comes. I don’t do client work on the weekends, so my priorities shift when the weekend arrives.

The key is having three strong #priorities in your life... Click To Tweet

The key is having three strong priorities in your life. Not two and not four, as two isn’t enough and four is too much to worry about for one day. Set your priorities, write them down, look at them throughout the day and let your three top priorities dictate what you do today.
